Caching in on the good weather

Visitors to England’s number one tourism experience this summer are invited to take part in a treasure hunt with a difference.

As part of its award winning Art & Architecture programme, Kielder Water & Forest Park in Northumberland is to host a new series of unique arts workshops.

One of the Epic Arts workshops is Creative Geocaching, which will take place on Sunday August 18.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt where participants use GPS equipped smart phones and devices to locate a cache (a box of trinkets).

It is popular worldwide and there are an estimated 1.4 million caches tucked away across the planet. 

The adventure will begin searching for caches that have been hidden around the historic Kielder Castle, then after lunch, the treasure hunters will use their artistic abilities to create their very own caches to hide in Kielder Water & Forest Park, or anywhere they choose!

Peter Sharpe, Art and Architecture Curator at Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust, said: "Kielder Art & Architecture’s new workshop programme is exploring a range of different and unusual ways to engage with Kielder’s fascinating landscape and history. 

"Geocaching is a great way to use modern technology creatively - and also have a lot of fun whilst you are doing it."

The Creative Geocaching workshop is suitable for both children and adults but participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

The day starts at Kielder Castle from 11am until 3pm and costs £25 per person. Participants can bring a packed lunch or there are cafe facilities.
