Stargazing breaks in Northumberland

As the nights draw in, Northumberland lights up.

Home to the world’s fourth largest Dark Sky Park, accommodation providers in the county are to play a starring role in its Dark Sky Park status.

To make sure you get the best out of our heavenly nights, the Animating Dark Skies* Partnership have been working hard to organise a galaxy of stargazing evenings and short breaks with trained star guides.

As well as evening events, a number of short stargazing breaks have been set up  at some of the area’s darkest night accommodation.  Friendly, overnight comfort, stargazing on the doorstep and late breakfasts are a speciality.  (See Stargazing Short Breaks below and contact accommodation providers direct to book).

Carrol Armstong, proprietor of The Redesdale Arms in the heart of the Dark Sky Park said: “We just love to see the look of wonder on people’s faces when they first look up into our night skies. It’s great to have the whole region rallying round to promote our nights now and we’re delighted to be taking part.”

Lesley Silvera, Project Development Officer, North Pennines AONB added: “This is a really exciting events programme giving people a chance to see very bright stars within very dark skies and we think people will love it. You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy these events; the programme is intended to be fun and informal but will be packed with knowledge sharing and intelligent discussion as well as leaving room for awe and wonder.”

As well as this programme of special events, there is a continuous programme of activities for keen amateurs and beginners at Kielder Observatory in Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

The full programme of events and activities will continue after Christmas until the nights begin to lengthen at the end of March.
