Young Ecologists

Overview

We are looking for students aged between 13-18 to further their knowledge in the science of ecology with 2 days of study at Kielder Water & Forest Park.

15th September: Biodiversity challenges Find out why we are losing a species a day. We are now undergoing the sixth mass extinction – the last of these was when we lost the dinosaurs… What are we doing about this crisis? How are we starting to solve these challenges? You’ll be learning all about this but also gathering data with us to find out how we measure biodiversity and visiting one of the solutions - the Kielder Wildwood project.

13th October: Aliens and reintroductions What are alien invasive species? Why are they bad news for our native animals and plants? How can we solve some of this by bringing species back – like the Kielder water vole? We’ll visit sites where this has been happening and also do some mammal detection with field signs, cameras and tracking.

The programme is subsidised by the Heritage Lottery-funded Living Wild at Kielder project and is delivered by Albion Outdoors, specialists in ecological education.
