On some of our new signage you’ll start to see the inclusion of what3words addresses in the form ///word.word.word.

These are part of a first improvement project, delivered as part of Northumbrian Water Group’s exciting new bespoke performance commitment that aims to enhance areas of water environment where it is accessible to customers.

About what3words

When you’re exploring new places, finding the right location is really important but exact viewpoints or locations on walking trails can be difficult to communicate.

That’s why we’re starting to use what3words. It’s an easy way to identify precise locations. Every 3 metre square has been given a unique combination of three words: a what3words address. For example, ///tripling.journey.springing is a jetty on Kielder Water.

You can download the free what3words app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Using what3words to share an exact location

If you want to let someone know exactly where to meet you, you can send them a what3words address and they’ll be able to navigate to that location.

To share a what3words address:

  1. Open the what3words app.
  2. Select the square that you’d like to share.
    • Tip: You can find your current location by tapping the location icon on the lower right hand side.
  3. Tap Share, then choose how you want to share the what3words address.

Using what3words in an emergency

To find you more easily in an emergency, many UK Emergency Services are encouraging you to share your 3 word address.

We would always recommend being fully prepared with a map and clear route information when you’re out exploring. However, in the event of becoming lost in an unfamiliar area, the what3words system can be an additional aid to help the emergency services locate you.

The what3words app works offline so you can still enter 3 words and find the exact location even without a connection.
